Accrington v Cancun. St Helens v Tenerife. Barnstaple v Rio.
Not an improbable series of internationals. But the choices we make when we travel.
This website is a user’s guide to the less obvious corners of the UK. Based on an irregular column in the Guardian, the short travelogues splice together architecture and heritage, history and personal impressions.
Select the town, village, borough or city you want to read about from the list below. It's also available in alphabetical order above and on this map.

This is the website of Chris Moss, educator, editor, author, photographer, guide and gourmand. After writing mainly about Latin America, Spain, Italy, Greenland, Kamchatka, Antarctica, Tasmania and the ROTW for thirty years, he has turned his gaze on the UK’s “undertourism” cool-spots featured in this guide. He writes for UK nationals, choice periodicals and little magazines. A full CV and back catalogue can be ignored here.
He has edited and contributed to many guidebooks. He has also written a cultural history of Patagonia, a walking guide to part of the Wales Coast Path and a memoir-travelogue-history about his birthplace and current home county Lancashire.
A book based on some of these ‘Seldom Trod’ destinations is forthcoming.
